Academic skills transfer when new languages are acquired. The cognitive skills used in academic work is the same regardless of the languages (Choudhury & Garrison-Fletcher, 2017, quoting Cummins, 2005). Refugee and immigrant students with interrupted formal education experiences often struggle with these academic skills in addition to language barriers which makes it difficult to find success in U.S. schools (Hos , 2016, citing Carholl, Sua’rez-Orozco, & Pa’ez, 2008).
