Ideologies are constructed to support people’s impulses. People are not driven by ideology, but construct ideology to support their impulses. This is an idea that was shared by Brennan Lee Mulligan in Keeping a Game Going (with Amy Vorpahl) that I would like to explore further. He does emphasize that this is for most people, so that would imply there are people for whom ideology drives their impulses. This might be what people consider to be a “developed character,” which is someone who tames and changes their impulses to align with a higher ideal. This idea has some weight to it. The vast majority of people do not work to reflect on or change their habits, but instead develop a worldview that supports them. The opposite would be a person of moral character, who decides on an ideology that they believe is just and uses that code to reflect on and change their personal habits.
