Immigrant communities in Johnson County face several challenges. One third of the local immigrant population reported living in crowded multi-generational housing. The overwhelming majority also qualified as low-income.1 It has also been reported that landlords often take advantage of limited understanding of English and procedural norms in the United States.2 There are also challenges in getting healthcare due to a combination of low income and a 5-year-waiting list for residents.3 Finally, overcoming poverty is a challenge when few places will hire you if you have an accent; regardless of your language skills.4
