There are four identity statuses in Marcia's [1964, 1966, as cited by @2011kroger_identity, p. 34] model based on the two variables of exploration and commitment.
| | High Comittment | Low Comittment |
| ---------------- | -------------------- | -------------- |
| High Exploration | Identity Acheivement | Moratorium |
| Low Exploration | Foreclosure | Diffusion |
Along statuses involving low commitment, both *diffusion* and *moratorium* statuses are possible. Someone who has done little to no exploration and has no commitment to any particular position on an identity is said to be in diffusion. Someone who is doing a lot of exploration without commitment is said to be in moratorium. This would include students who change majors often or who have an undeclared major and are trying a lot of different career options.
Among high commitment options includes those who have not explored much. These are given the status of *foreclosure*. Examples of this status include people who decided to become a doctor due to family pressures and they haven't explored whether that's what they truly wanted to do. High commitment and high exploration is the status of *identity achievement*. In other words, people with an identity with a status of achievement have high levels of personal investment in that identity and have spent enough time exploring the range of options available to them.
