Publishing often has many benefits. The nature of internet content removes a lot of risk of failure when writing because uninteresting content gets ignored quietly (Evans, 2023). Gian-Carlo Rota (1997) advised young scholars to publish their work in multiple places, gradually improving it over time. This quantity-first, quality-later approach is also common among Internet content creators (Evans, 2023).
Publishing can be an anxiety-provoking endeavor, and anxiety often limits what we feel comfortable doing either through avoidance behaviors or perfectionism (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1991). Publishing often is one way to overcome it. Even if you think you don’t have the expertise to write about a particular topic, remember that you only need to know more than your audience (Rota, 1997)— and you control who your audience is by where you publish. Removing this anxiety barrier to publishing can lead to more opportunities to learn and be recognized for one’s work.
