Racial gaslighting is the act of attempting to convince a victim of racial microaggressions that the behavior was not racially motivated. Microaggressions are hostilities related to another person’s minority status. Gasam Asare (2023), a Black female professional, describes such a situation where she would complain about being treated differently due to her race, and others would point out other Black people who were succeeding in the same groups thereby invalidating or minimizing her complaint. Since we can never truly share the same perspective and experiences as another person, the changes that they see something we do not is very high. Gaslighting in any form primarily serves to silence marginalized voices in order to keep the status quo of intersecting privileged identities.
