Pedagogical techniques like anonymous grading makes it harder for you to know who it is you are grading, so the identities that we are biased towards are less noticeable. Grading contracts can help by making it more clear to all parties what is being graded and how. Clarifying what you mean can also help, as often we make a lot of assumptions about background or shared knowledge that students have. Finally, an asset-based mindset can shift your perspective to help you see what students bring to the class, rather than just what they lack.
