The additional cost of debt and family support among African Americans is known as the Black tax. Gassam Asare describes this as the result of a legacy of racialized injustices that disrupted African American’s ability to develop generational wealth which is critical to the support and security of families (Gassam Asare, 2023, p. 43, 137, also citing Khalfani-Cox, 2021). While disproportionately affecting African Americans and kept in place through inhumane policies, this experience is also common with immigrants in the Diversity Lottery program due to the debts incurred in visa and transportation fees and family needs in their home country (Hailu, 2012, p. 12—13). Immigrants who arrive through this program are in a position that requires them to take any job available, even far removed from their hard-earned qualifications.
