Experiences that align with our habitus are more valued than others. For example, education institutions tend not to recognize or value the knowledge and experience of refugee students (Hos, 2016), whereas the experience of wealthier students who traveled to Europe when they were younger may be valued more highly. Similarly, students with degrees from universities in the global south are rarely understood or valued by academic institutions in the global north (Hailu et al, 2012, citing Arthur, 2008; Mahalingham, 2006; Rotimi, 2005).
